Councilors didn’t represent public
The Bandon City Council was presented with a resolution requesting the State of Oregon Parks Department to restore the Coquille River Lighthouse to the colors we have all known for years. In fact, no one now living ever remembers it being any other color than white with a black roof. Museum director Judy Knox found a document issued on February 28, 1896, one day before the lighthouse was officially commissioned, indicating the lighthouse was white on a stone base.
Our mayor, Mary Schamehorn, argued — quite convincingly to me — that there are lots of good reasons to restore the lighthouse back to white with a black roof. I also argued for restoration to white and black. Margaret Gorman, longtime resident and high school art teacher, argued in favor of changing the colors back to white and black.
As I sat in the council chambers I noticed that a quilt that had been presented to the city of Bandon, as part of the Bandon Centennial celebration, had a white lighthouse with a black roof. I looked at the mat on the floor, where speakers stand to address the council, and I was aware that the color was not red and beige. I looked at the patch on the shoulder of our Chief of Police, who was at the meeting, and it was white with a black roof.
Despite our arguments for restoration to white with a black roof only two councilors, Blythe Tiffany and Chris Powell, voted for the resolution and four councilors, Mike Claassen, Joe Briscoe, Nancy Drew and Geri Procetto voted against the resolution to restore the lighthouse to the colors we have always known.
I urge any of you old-time residents of Bandon who would like to see the colors of the lighthouse restored to white with a black roof to write a letter our mayor and councilors, send them an e-mail, or come to the monthly council meeting and address the council. I do not believe the people of Bandon were represented by the voting that night by our councilors. Airlee Owens
